“Tupela Poroman – Germany and Papua New Guinea” Photographic Exhibition August 2011

To show recognition of the deep colonial history that Papua New Guinea shares with its old friend Germany, the East New Britain Provincial Administration in collaboration with the Tourism Authority, is hosting a photographic exhibition in August 2011 displaying rare images of life during German settlement in the then German New Guinea. While over 130 years since the first German contact, Papua New Guinea still bears the evidence of the typical vigorously designed infrastructure and other developments, reminiscent of the German persistence in expanding its empire in the South Pacific. The exhibition will display images extracted from historic archives of early German colonisation, illustrating the beginnings of relationships between national, colonial and other early settling communities. The photographs will depict developments in infrastructure, mapping, administration systems, transport, trade and economy as well as portraying religion and the interaction between these newly encountered communities. A logo competition is also being run by the provincial Tourism and Education Divisions, inviting local secondary students to design a logo for the exhibition.
