Caves

caves
Caves created during the Second World War.

Most, if not all natural caves or sinkholes in the Province are found in the Pomio District because of its limestone landscape.  French cavers have discovered most of the caves in the Pomio District.  Every year cavers go to Pomio from January to March.

In early 2004, some French cavers discovered a new cave called Marana Cave with human bones and drawings on the ceiling and on the walls near Jacquinot Bay Airstrip.

People who are interested in cave exploration are encouraged to go to Pomio District and enter some of the caves situated in Central Pomio.  Muruk Cave is the deepest cave in the Southern hemisphere. Kavakuna Cave which is also in Pomio District is a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) of about 6000 hectares.
